Making things

Facet

A learning app wearing the clothes of a progression system. Facet issues a handful of directives each day, sized to your rank and drawn from the subjects you have bound to your character, and grades what you actually recall. The levels, ranks and skill tree are game furniture; the questions underneath are built from real reference data.

What it is

You pick subjects - Facet calls them aspects - and the system keeps a rolling inventory of tasks drawn from them. It balances the forms of task it gives you, favours the forms you avoid, and brings back what you missed, because a wrong answer that never returns teaches nothing. Days build a streak, expeditions give a longer structured run, and a set of protocol pages explains every mechanic in the system's own voice.

The subject packs on the public build run from arithmetic, algebra, geometry and probability through physical and political geography, flags, languages and currencies, the periodic table, the planets, music theory, the birds of Finland, aircraft types and aviation weather decoding, Rust and Odin programming, K-pop history and releases, and a set of trading-card and creature-collection packs for people who want their recall practice to be about something they already love.

Where the questions come from

Each pack states its own sources in the pack file itself, and the ones drawn from open data name every dataset and licence.

Birds of Finland
The 260 most-recorded birds, learned by their Finnish names. Names and taxonomy follow the eBird and Clements taxonomy with BirdLife Suomi's Finnish names; conservation status from Wikidata (CC0); occurrence and seasonality from GBIF (CC BY); morphometrics, habitat and lifestyle from AVONET (CC BY 4.0); diet and foraging from EltonTraits 1.0 (CC0), joined on the GBIF taxon key.
Music, astronomy, chemistry, geography
The K-pop packs are built from MusicBrainz records (CC0). The astronomy pack works from committed NASA-derived records, the elements pack from a committed periodic-table snapshot, and the geography packs from a committed 2026 world snapshot, so a question can never drift while you are answering it.
The rest
The mathematics, music-theory and programming packs are authored content rather than open-data extracts, so they name no external dataset. The creature-collection packs are marked in the pack itself as personal learning only and not for sale, with the trademarks named as belonging to their owners.

What it does not do

It hands out no certificate and claims no accreditation; the ranks are the game's own and mean nothing outside it. It does not require an account to play, and it does not ask for payment anywhere. The questions come from the packs themselves, which are served as plain files and versioned like code, so what you are asked today is the same thing anyone else is asked from that pack.

Where it stands

Live and free. Local play needs no account and keeps your progress in your own browser. Signing in, by an emailed link, exists for one reason: to sync that progress between devices. Subject packs are added over time, so the list above grows.

facet.mtclab.netThe protocol pages inside the app document every mechanic, including what a streak does and what happens when a day closes unclaimed.
